Diovan and Heartburn
![]() |
Diovan is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure. It's known as an ACB, or angiotensin II receptor blocker. Angiotensin II is a bodily hormone that narrows the blood vessels, which can cause high blood pressure. Although this prescription can be effective for high blood pressure, there are some side effects, including heartburn. If you are concerned about Diovan and heartburn, consult with your doctor.
While Diovan can lead to heartburn, it may not always be the cause. Heartburn, also called acid reflux, occurs when stomach acid travels upwards into the esophagus rather than down into the stomach. This can cause an uncomfortable burning sensation which may become worse when you lie down or bend over. You may also experience painful belching which can bring up acidic liquid. Usually, the problem occurs shortly after eating or drinking and can last from minutes to hours. It's true that some prescriptions like Diovan can cause heartburn, but there are other causes as well that may be to blame.
Many people find that what they eat has a lot to do with their heartburn. Spicy foods, fatty foods, citrus fruits, tomatoes, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol are all potential culprits. Eating large meals, and eating close to bedtime can also make heartburn symptoms occur. Even smoking can play a role in the occurrence of this problem. Although you should see your doctor if heartburn is an issue for you, relief may be as simple as making some dietary modifications.
If diet changes alone don't take care of the problem, you may want to consider trying an over the counter antacid such as Mylanta, Maalox, Rolaids or Tums. Antacids work to neutralize stomach acid and provide relief for the uncomfortable symptoms of acid reflex. Be sure to ask your doctor before taking them, because although antacids are available over the counter they can interact with certain prescription medications.
If you have questions about Diovan and heartburn, see your doctor. He or she should be able to determine if the Diovan is causing the heartburn or if something else might be to blame. Once the problem is properly diagnosed, you will be presented with treatment options that may include dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, over the counter remedies or prescription medications.
