Is There a Drink to Relieve Heartburn?

If you suffer from heartburn caused by acid reflux, then you may be searching for a way to alleviate the problem. Heartburn is a burning sensation that happens when stomach acid travels up to the esophagus rather than staying in the stomach where it belongs. Many people wonder if there is a drink to relieve heartburn. As a matter of fact, there are several that may provide relief. One word of caution, however. Always see your doctor before attempting to treat heartburn yourself and get his or her OK before trying any natural remedies. The information in this article should not be used as a substitute for medical advice.

Before we talk about beverages to help heartburn, let's talk about a few that can make the problem worse. Coffee, tea containing caffeine, soft drinks, peppermint tea, citrus or tomato juice, and alcohol are all examples of beverages that can make acid reflux and the heartburn it causes worse. So, if heartburn is a problem for you, avoid these drinks. Now let's look at some drinks that may help.

Ginger Root Tea: For ages, ginger has been used not only in cooking, but to relieve a variety of gastrointestinal and esophageal complaints. Ginger relaxes the muscles lining the esophagus which can help prevent acid reflux. To make ginger root tea, simply combine a teaspoon of grated ginger with a cup of boiling water and steep for ten minutes.

Slippery Elm Tea: Slippery Elm not only soothes sore throats, it helps provide a barrier against the damaging properties of acid reflux and can help heartburn sufferers. You will probably need to obtain slippery elm bark or already prepared tea made with slippery elm from your local health food store or herb shop.

Fennel Tea: Fennel can be very soothing also for heartburn sufferers, and is widely available at supermarkets everywhere. To make fennel tea, combine one-half teaspoon of crushed fennel seeds with a cup of boiling water and steep for ten minutes before drinking.

Licorice Root Tea: Natural licorice root is another commonly used natural remedy for acid reflux and heartburn. Because licorice root may be hard to get outside of a well-stocked health food store or herb shop, try buying licorice root tea already made into tea bags. You can often find this tea not only at a health food store but in the herbal tea aisle of some supermarkets.

Certain Vegetable Juices: While some vegetable juices can make the problem worse, others can help. Try using a juicer to make fresh juice out of beetroot, radishes, carrots and cucumbers. The alkalinity of these particular vegetables can help alleviate excess acid production in the stomach.

Water: Last but not least, plain old water can be a drink to relieve heartburn. When you feel an onset of heartburn, drink a big glass of water to help push the acid back down to the stomach.
