Heartburn, Indigestion & Acid Reflux -- Causes and Cures
![]() |
You might be wondering if there is a difference between heartburn, indigestion and acid reflux. As a matter of fact, there is. Heartburn refers to the sensation you experience because of acid reflux. Acid reflux is an occurrence where the stomach acid travels upwards into the esophagus rather than down into the stomach. Indigestion, on the other hand, can refer to a variety of conditions including but not limited to acid reflux, bloating and stomachache. You might sometimes hear heartburn being referred to as acid indigestion.
Acid reflux can not only cause heartburn, but also uncomfortable belching and difficulty swallowing. The sensations associated with acid reflux may become worse when you lie down. Many sufferers find that their acid reflux is most severe at night. There are many reasons why you may experience acid reflux and heartburn. One of the most common relates to what you eat, as well as when and how you eat it.
Spicy food, fatty food, citrus, tomato, caffeinated beverages and alcohol are all potential culprits. Eating close to bedtime, and eating large meals can also be factors in the occurrence of acid reflux and heartburn. Try cutting out irritating foods and beverages, eating smaller, more evenly spaced meals, and avoiding food two to three hours before going to bed. Wearing tight clothing can also make heartburn worse, so try wearing looser fitting garments. Even smoking cigarettes can be a culprit, so if you smoke, quit. Not only could quitting improve your heartburn, it could improve your health in other ways, too!
Some people experience acid reflux because their LES, or lower esophageal sphincter, lacks proper tone or does not function properly. Normally, the LES opens only when you swallow so that food can get to the stomach, then it quickly closes. If the LES stays open or doesn't close the right way, stomach acid can flow upwards into the esophagus, causing heartburn and associated symptoms. Another reason recurring heartburn occurs is because of GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. If you think you may be suffering from GERD, see your doctor right away to obtain treatment. In rare cases, untreated GERD may eventually lead to esophageal cancer or other serious problems.
If you have questions or concerns about heartburn, indigestion or acid reflux, see your doctor. Not only can you learn more about each condition, you can learn why you are experiencing discomfort as well as the best way to treat the problem.
