Heartburn, Indigestion & Acid Reflux -- Causes and Cures
![]() |
Heartburn indigestion symptoms and acid reflux. Heartburn is the sensation you experience because of an acid reflux where the stomach acids are going against the normal flow and travelling upwards into the esophagus rather than down into the stomach. Indigestion can include acid reflux but mainly refers to feeling bloated and stomach ache. People will often talk about heartburn as being acid indigestion.
Acid reflux doesn't just cause heartburn. It can also cause uncomfortable belching and difficulty swallowing and the sensations you experience with heartburn indigestion may even become worse if you lie down. Tiredness seems to play a part as many heartburn sufferers may find that their acid reflux is most severe at night. Of all the different reasons why you might experience acid reflux and heartburn indigestion the most common culprit seems to be the foods you eat and how fast you eat it.
Many different spicy foods, high fat foods, citrus fruit, tomato, caffeinated beverages and alcohol are all described as being likely heartburn indigestion causes. If you often eat before going to bed or you eat large meals you may find this also contributes to the problems of acid reflux and heartburn. If you cut down on the frequency of eating some of these irritating foods and beverages that might help, and start eating smaller meals, spacing them out during the day. Avoid eating food for two to three hours before you go to bed. It has also been suggested that wearing tight fitting clothing may make heartburn indigestion worse, so try to wear looser garments. Smoking cigarettes is also suggested as another culprit so if you smoke, quit and it might reduce the incidence of heartburn for you.
Heartburn indigestion can occur when your lower esophageal sphincter lacks proper tone or does not function properly. Most of the time the LES opens only when you swallow which allows food to get to the stomach but it should then quickly close. If the LES stays open for a longer period or doesn't close completely, stomach acid and the stomach gases may flow upwards into the esophagus, causing heartburn indigestion and associated symptoms. Recurring heartburn sometimes occurs because of GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. If you think you may be suffering from GERD, or any other medical condition see your doctor right away to obtain treatment. In some rare cases, untreated GERD may eventually lead to esophageal cancer or other serious health problems.
If you have any questions or concerns about heartburn indigestion, acid reflux or any other medical concern you should see your doctor. Not only will you learn more about each of these conditions but you can learn why you are experiencing discomfort as well as the best ways you can treat the problem and hopefully get some relief.
