Options for Heartburn Relief

Heartburn, also called acid reflux, is a condition where the LES, or lower esophageal sphincter does not close the right way. This causes stomach acid to flow upwards into the esophagus and can cause a variety of uncomfortable symptoms. In this article you will learn more about the causes of this problem, and also how to find heartburn relief.

Sometimes, the lower esophageal sphincter is weak in tone and cannot function as it should. Other times, the esophagus does not work properly and cannot push the stomach acid down. Commonly, diet and lifestyle play a role in the occurrence of acid reflux. Foods that can lead to heartburn include tomato products, certain spices, fatty foods, citrus, tomatoes, and even chocolate. Certain beverages can also be to blame, including coffee, tea, soft drinks, and alcohol. If you smoke, that could also be a factor. There are certain conditions that can also be the cause. GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is one of the most common. Others include gastritis, hiatal hernia and peptic ulcer.

The first thing to do when seeking a remedy for your uncomfortable symptoms is to find out why they are happening. It's a good idea to keep a food journal and document what you are eating at what times. You may find that certain foods or what time you eat them lead to heartburn. Try making some dietary modifications such as eating smaller meals and cutting out aggravating foods. You may find that simple changes in diet provide relief. If you drink alcohol excessively or smoke, quit. Not only can giving up these two things potentially improve your acid reflux, it can improve other aspects of your health as well.

It's important to see your doctor if your acid reflux is chronic or causing you a great deal of discomfort. There are various ways your doctor can determine why the problem is occurring. Once a diagnosis is made, you will learn about the options available for treating the problem. Heartburn relief can come in the form of dietary modification, over the counter antacids, or prescription medications. Sometimes, even home remedies can be effective. Some people find relief with remedies like ginger tea and papaya enzymes. If you choose to use an alternative remedy, ask your doctor first. He or she may refer you to a specialist who can guide you in the safe use of natural remedies.
