![]() |
The condition known as heartburn which is also often refered to as acid reflux, is a condition whereby acid from the stomach manages to go against it's normal behaviour as it travels upwards into the esophagus and causes uncomfortable burning sensations in the chest area.
Another very common symptom of this condition is when you experience a sour taste in the mouth and throat and you may also have difficulty swallowing. There are many millions of people all over the world who experience thsi heartburn as frequently as once a month or even more often than that. There are thought to be many causes of heartburn and there are probably just as many remedies.
To successfully treat acid reflux it is important to understand the causes and what particular things lead to you suffering it. There are many people who would attribute their heartburn to dietry habits. Very spicy or high fat foods are regular problem foods for people who suffer heartburn. It isn't just those foods though and citrus, tomatoes, caffeine and alcohol are all considered to be contributing factors. Some people find that if they eat close to bedtime it can cause an onset of heartburn. There are many other reasons and some people find that their heartburn is caused by certain medications or conditions like GERD, which stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease.
The simplest and most natural heartburn remedy is generally effective for a lot of people so if you suffer acid reflux try changing the diet you eat. If you can avoid some of the aggravating foods and eating smaller meals, and eat more slowly than previously you may find you can almost put a stop to bouts of heartburn.
Some people have found that wearing looser fitting clothing can also provide relief. Smoking seems to make things worse so quitting smoking might be a great idea.
Natural treatments like herbal teas made from soothing ingredients like ginger and even homeopathic remedies are popular with some people and are enjoyable to drink whether they help or not. Both licorice and aloe vera are old folk heartburn remedies that you might like to try. If you want to try an alternative treatment it would be wise to visit a licensed professional such as a dietician, physician or naturopath.
We all know about the over the counter antacids and medications that are so frequently advertised. Antacids work to neutralize the acid in the stomach which should reduce the discomfort. Common antacids include the names Maalox, Mylanta, Tums and Rolaids. While these antacids are readily available, inexpensive and generally safe and effective, you should still consult your doctor before using them especially if you have regular problems with heartburn or have other medical conditions since they might potentially interact with certain prescription medicines.
Some heartburn sufferers do find the best relief they get is from drugs prescribed by their doctor. Prescriptions are often recommended for sufferers of GERD, people with peptic ulcers, or those who experience frequent or severe acid reflux. There are two main types which ar the Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and H2 antagonists. Both of these types work to reduce the amount of stomach acid that is produced.
The best way to choose the right heartburn remedies for you is consult with your doctor. After a thorough examination, your doctor will diagnose the cause of the problem and tell you which treatment options are recommended for your particular case.
